The Performance Benefits of Stone Wool

A high-performing material, volcanic stone is the bedrock of every Rockfon sound-absorbing solution.

At Rockfon, we harness the inherent properties of volcanic stone for healthier, safer, and more comfortable spaces.

How it's made

Stone as foundation

The earliest documented origins of stone wool date back to Hawaii in the early nineteenth century when scientists noted that erupting lava could form fine, hair-like fibres – a phenomenon later called “Pele’s Hair” in honour of the volcano goddess.

Acoustics

Thanks to its porous fibre structure, stone wool typically achieves Class A sound absorption, efficiently resolving noise issues in interior spaces.

Fire Safety

Stone wool is naturally non-combustible and remains stable at temperatures above 1000°C – and helps slow the spread of fire to support safer buildings.

Health & Hygiene

Because stone wool has no nutritional value for mould or harmful micro-organisms and does not retain moisture, it supports cleaner, more hygienic indoor environments.

Quality & Durability

With its dimensional stability, stone wool resists moisture and sagging, maintaining both its appearance and acoustic performance for decades without the need for replacement.

Light Reflection

With up to 87 percent light reflection and over 99 percent light diffusion, Rockfon white-coloured surfaces help spread daylight deeper into interiors to support visual comfort and energy use.

Design Flexibility

Thanks to a wide choice of product types, installation methods, shapes, colours, and textures, Rockfon stone wool solutions bring modular design principles to a wide range of architectural expressions.

Supporting a circular economy

Beyond all its performance strengths, stone wool contributes to more sustainable building practices.
